Sweet Violet -viola odorata– is a much loved fragrant wildflower that evokes memories of spring. It’s preferred habitat is woodland glades and hedgerows and in garden settings can be grown wherever there is plently of shade and rich moist soil. Sweet Violets are low growing species with delightful heart-shaped leaves and purple blue flowers that appear from March to May, often with secondary flowering between June and September. In the wild the seed is sometimes carried by ants, and plants also spread by means of runners. Sweet Violet looks best growing with other spring wildflowers such as Primroses, Greater Stitchwort. How to grow Sweet Violet Seeds Sweet Violet seeds should be sown in autumn, either outside, where they are to flower, or in seed trays left outside and covered lightly with compost. Sweet Violet seeds can be erratic to germinate and the seedlings which appear in the spring after a period of chilling, can be pricked out and grown on, for planting out later in the year. The addition of leaf mould to the soil will be of benefit, by helping to retain moisture. Eventually mature plants can be divided and transplanted in spring.
