Long headed Poppy Seeds papaver dubium - is similar to the more familiar corn poppy but with paler petals and a seed capsule that is long rather than round. It can be found growing along roadsides, on waste ground and cultivated areas such as field margins. Long headed Poppies can be included in a garden flower border or cornfield meadow and are useful plants for attracting insects such as bees. The orangey red flowers appear in June and July and look best growing in full sun with other annuals such as Cornflowers, Corn Marigolds or Corn Chamomile which will give the plants some support.

How to grow Long headed Poppy Seeds
It is best to sow Long headed Poppy seeds in the autumn directly outside where the plants are to flower, and onto bare prepared soil. The seeds will benefit from the cold of winter and germinate the following spring. It is important not to sow Long headed Poppy seeds too deeply as they also require some light to trigger the germination. The soil should be disturbed every autumn if you wish to encourage Long headed Poppy to re-establish from their own seed. Unfortunately it is not possible to introduce poppies into meadows that already contain established meadow grass. The grass will only act as a barrier to the poppies and prevent their successful development.
