Wood Cranesbill –geranium sylvaticum – grows best in the shade of woodlands and hedgerows but can also be grown in full sun. In woodland gardens it is useful for providing continuous colour into the summer months, after other woodland plants are over. Wood Cranesbill normally grows to about 2 foot high and has rich purple flowers in June and July. Later in the season the foliage turns a beautiful crimson red. Wood Cranesbill looks best growing with woodland wild flowers such as Herb Robert, and Wood Avens.

How to grow Wood Cranesbill Seeds
Wood Cranesbill seeds should be sown in spring or autumn, outside, where they are to flower, or in seed trays and covered lightly with compost. Germination can be improved by lightly rubbing the seeds between 2 sheets of sandpaper. This is known as scarification and helps break down the tough outer shell of Wood Cranesbill seeds. The seedlings can then be pricked out and grown on, for planting out later in the year.
