WILDLIFE RECORDING APPLICATIONS

Disclaimer: The author of these applications accepts no responsibility for damages resulting from the use of this product or CyberTracker software and makes no warranty or representation, either express or implied, including but not limited to, any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. This software is provided "AS IS", and you, its user, assumes all risks when using it.

What are these applications for?

Below you will find various free wildlife logging applications that I have written for use with CyberTracker software (V3.205 or greater) on handheld devices. CyberTracker generally works on most PDA's, Palms and Smartphones with a touchscreen and  Windows Mobile operating system. Before you start however please check the compatibility of your device at : http://www.steventonconsulting.com/CyberTrackerFAQ.aspx
I personally use CyberTracker on a WM5 Mio P350 digiwalker in a waterproof Aquapac and find this set up works extremely well in the field.

My applications have been designed to maximise the efficiency of field data collection and monitor wildlife populations in a way not possible previously. CyberTracker uses GPS to record the location from where your sightings are made so is intended for use on mobiles with GPS receivers. It can however still be used without GPS as an ordinary wildlife logging application. Eventually I hope to add similar applications for other forms of wildlife. I hope you enjoy using my CyberTracker applications!

Before you start I highly recommend reading the various help available on the CyberTracker website in particular the "frequently asked questions" section. You can find some useful links at the bottom of this page.

To use my applications proceed as follows:

  1. Download the latest version of CyberTracker tracker software onto your desktop P.C. available at:
http://www.steventonconsulting.com/cybertracker.aspx Note: CyberTracker requires Microsoft Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista. Windows 95/98/Me are not supported.
  2. Click the appropriate download link at the foot of this page, choose "save" and save to a folder on your desktop PC as a .ctx file
  3. Open CyberTracker on your desktop P.C. and select "open database"
  4. Find, select and open the downloaded ctx file
  5. Under the file menu select "save as" and save my application with a name of your choice.
  6. Connect your mobile device to your desktop via ActiveSync or equivalent.
  7. Once connected return to CyberTracker, ensure that my application is opened and click "install windows mobile" or "install palm" At this stage you will be prompted to register CyberTracker software for which a password will be required and emailed to you.
  8. Once you have your password repeat steps 6 and 7 and follow the on screen instructions. CyberTracker will install a CAB file onto your mobile device. At this point perform any necessary steps to install CyberTracker onto your mobile device.
  9. Once you have CyberTracker successfully installed onto your device, repeat steps 6 and 7, this time to transfer my application to your device.
  10. You are now ready to begin using CyberTracker! To get you started you will find some help taps at the top of each screen on my applications.
  11. Tip: if you wish to use CyberTracker at the same time as other applications with built in GPS such as mapping applications, then I suggest that you open these applications and acquire a GPS signal before you first open CyberTracker. Once CyberTracker has detected a free GPS port, it will remember it for all future tries.
  12. To upload your sighting from your mobile device back to your desktop simply reconnect using ActiveSync or equivalent. Once you have a connection your sightings should be automatically uploaded for further analysis, export etc.

Unfortunately I am unable to answer emails relating to the use of either my applications or CyberTracker software, however please feel free to send any comments, or suggestions using the contact form here : click to go to contact form with the phrase "cybertacker wildlife logging" at the top of your comments. You can also email me any sightings using the "export data" function in CyberTracker. If I receive enough wildflower sightings then eventually I plan to release them back as a free download in the form of a wildflower "points of interest" database. This could then be uploaded to GPS devices such as SAT Nav's or mapping applications such as memory map.
