HABITAT CREATION

This section contains information about habitat creation beyond the confines of the average wildflower garden. Over the last 50 years, the English countryside has suffered from loss and fragmentation of many important wildlife habitats. As a result, many of our native animal and plant species have declined. Of particular note in recent years, the decline in many of our once common farmland birds, e.g. skylark, reed bunting, lapwing, has been realised. When used correctly, our mixtures will provide a food source for breeding and wintering farmland bird populations.

Loss of ancient woodland and flower rich grassland, draining of wetlands, removal of hedgerows and the replacement of traditional farming by more intensive methods, have taken their toll.

As a result, there are now many opportunities for habitat creation schemes within the countryside and over the next few pages, you will find advice on the type of opportunities that exist and how our products can best be used for such schemes. From the outset it should be made clear that a habitat creation" project should only take place on sites without any significant existing wildlife value. The improvement of an existing wildlife area is normally termed habitat restoration". Wherever possible, seek expert advice from a local conservation organisation.
